The PPWR regulation: a reminder in 10 essential measures

The production of packaging waste in Europe is reaching alarming levels. On average, a European generates almost 180 kg of packaging waste per year, and this figure could rise by 19% by 2030, with a drastic increase of 46% for plastic waste.

Hanova is particularly sensitive to these figures. For many years now, we have been using recycled raw materials and reducing the thickness of materials to reduce the weight and volume of packaging, so that we can anticipate the situation well in advance. 🌱

The main culprits behind these figures?

🔹 Too much non-recyclable (and therefore non-reusable) packaging.

🔹 Labels that aren’t exactly clear when it comes to sorting.

🔹 Insufficient use of recycled materials.

Faced with this situation, the EU is taking action with the PPWR regulation, which imposes 10 essential measures to transform packaging management. A quick reminder?

1️⃣ All packaging must be recyclable by 2030.

2️⃣ Mandatory inclusion of recycled materials in plastic packaging.

3️⃣ Reducing the weight and volume of packaging.

4️⃣ Planning for systematic re-use of packaging (we recycle, but above all, we re-use).

5️⃣ Transparency about the materials used for packaging.

6️⃣ Communication on the possibilities for reusing packaging.

7️⃣ Guaranteed reuse of transport packaging.

8️⃣ Obligation for companies to provide an EU declaration of conformity for packaging.

9️⃣ Mandatory reduction of packaging waste by Member States.

Specific recycling targets imposed on Member States.

These measures are not just constraints, they are also opportunities: to reduce our environmental impact, stimulate innovation in materials and strengthen a circular economy.

👉 Businesses, consumers and decision-makers: let’s get involvedtoday! Less waste, more recycled materials and a planet that breathes better. 🌍
